I first heard Charlie Wilson’s single “Charlie, last name Wilson” while watching late night videos with my husband and we instantly knew that the smooth and contemporary song was a hit, at least for our generation. The next day, our 16-year-old son said he heard a song that he liked and asked if we knew of a “young” singer named Charlie Wilson. That confirmed it was a hit, for old and new schoolers alike, male or female.
This should come as no surprise, however, for the funkateers who know Charlie Wilson as being the lead singer of The Gap Band. For those too young to know, Charlie Wilson’s upcoming debut solo album with Jive Records entitled “Charlie, last name Wilson” (available September 13), will bridge the gap as he continues his R&B legacy but with today’s top producers such as R. Kelly, Kay Gee, and The Underdogs, just to name a few.
I was given the privilege of listening to an advance cd of a few more of Uncle Charlie’s singles, all of which are hits! Ladies, Charlie is taking good care of us on this album – you are guaranteed to melt. Men, please take notes, but rest assured, he is looking out for you too – if you get this album and a bucket of ice, you will be able to use them to your advantage with your woman. As a woman, however, I am especially partial to “No Words”. This song has a unique twist where Charlie is soulfully singing from a woman’s perspective,
creating a sincere understanding of how we really feel. I also enjoyed “My Guarantee”, a very catchy and upbeat song that got my fingers snappin’ and body movin’. Again, Charlie is saying everything a woman wants to hear, and I believe him too. I can’t wait for the album so I can hear more!
